Women's Probiotics + Hyaluronic Acid (Oral)Women's (vaginal) probiotics with oral hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide found in the skin's dermis and in joint fluid, a moisturising compound that holds several hundred times its own weight in water. Women's probiotic products combine strains for women's wellness, such as Lactobacillus, with oral hyaluronic acid to support both skin hydration and women's daily condition.
Ingested hyaluronic acid has been reported to be partly broken down by gut bacteria into low-molecular oligosaccharides and absorbed, with some distributed to skin tissue. A proposed mechanism is that these breakdown products stimulate hyaluronic acid synthesis and cell proliferation in fibroblasts, contributing to stratum corneum hydration and the skin barrier (reduced transepidermal water loss). Women's probiotics may help maintain a Lactobacillus-dominant state, the main bacteria of the vaginal environment, and a mildly acidic pH, but whether orally taken strains actually colonise varies by strain.
- In a 12-week double-blind RCT of 40 healthy Asian adults aged 35–64 (2021), the group taking hyaluronic acid 120 mg/day showed improvements in wrinkle assessment, stratum corneum hydration, transepidermal water loss and skin elasticity versus placebo.
- In a 12-week double-blind RCT of 150 healthy adults (2025), sodium hyaluronate at 120 mg/day was associated with increased skin hydration and elasticity, reduced transepidermal water loss and eye-area wrinkle depth, and increased epidermal thickness and natural moisturising factor (NMF), with smaller changes observed at 60 mg/day.
- A review (2014) summarised the absorption and skin distribution of oral hyaluronic acid, the mechanism by which it promotes hyaluronic acid synthesis in fibroblasts, and findings of increased skin hydration in RCTs of people with dry skin.
- In a 2-week RCT of 50 healthy women without vaginal discomfort (2023), a Lactobacillus-dominant vaginal microbiota and appropriate pH remained stable during oral probiotic intake (L. acidophilus La-14, L. rhamnosus HN001), with no safety issues reported (vaginal colonisation by the ingested strains was below the detection limit).
