About

Description

Information provided by the manufacturer, INNO Health & Care

Berberine Blood Sugar Care, a natural blood sugar support formula containing berberine — regarded as one of the most potent blood sugar support ingredients among health foods — has launched as a first in New Zealand.

Alongside berberine, the formula adds banaba leaf and bitter melon extracts, both known for supporting blood sugar balance, for a strong combined effect.

Unlike conventional medicines that lower blood sugar by stimulating an already weakened pancreas to release more insulin, Berberine Blood Sugar Care helps the body respond more sensitively to insulin, supporting healthy blood sugar levels in the most natural way.

Key ingredients

They also keep food in the stomach longer so blood sugar does not rise suddenly, and help reduce appetite by creating a feeling of fullness.

SGLT2 inhibitors are also widely used, helping to lower blood sugar by excreting excess glucose in the urine. In theory they look like an excellent medicine, but they too come with many side effects.

Ketones are strongly acidic and acidify the blood, interfering with normal function and raising the risk of serious harm.

Now let's look at the ingredients of this natural blood sugar support formula.

Berberine

Berberine has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine. It is a bioactive compound found in a range of plants, including goldenseal, Oregon grape, coptis and amur cork tree. Berberine supports blood sugar balance through the following four actions.

First, berberine activates AMPK, a key regulator of energy metabolism.
The most important function of berberine relates to AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase), an important enzyme in energy production that senses the body's energy status and plays a central role in maintaining energy balance. AMPK is activated when energy levels are low. When this enzyme is activated, it burns fatty acids and draws glucose into cells, lowering blood sugar. At the same time, it inhibits glucose and cholesterol synthesis, so it also helps support healthy cholesterol levels as a secondary benefit. (See the paper Berberine activates AMP-activated protein kinase in human hepatoma cells, published in the journal Diabetes.) Berberine's most important function is to activate AMPK, making the body act as if its energy levels were low so that cells use blood sugar efficiently, which helps lower sugar levels. In other words, it helps improve insulin sensitivity and supports healthy blood sugar levels at the root.

Second, berberine moderates carbohydrate absorption.
Berberine inhibits enzymes such as alpha-glucosidase, which break down complex carbohydrates into simple sugars like glucose in the gut, helping to prevent a sharp rise in post-meal blood sugar.

Third, it moderates gluconeogenesis in the liver.
In the fasting morning state, the body senses that blood sugar levels have dropped and the liver synthesises glucose. Berberine inhibits key enzymes for gluconeogenesis, helping to support healthy fasting blood sugar levels.

Finally, berberine helps balance the gut microbiome.

Banaba leaf

The most important active compound in banaba leaf is corosolic acid, which is known to promote glucose uptake into cells and lower blood sugar levels. Because it acts in a similar way to insulin, it is sometimes called a plant insulin.

Like berberine, banaba leaf inhibits the enzyme alpha-glucosidase, slowing the breakdown of carbohydrates into glucose, which helps reduce sudden post-meal blood sugar spikes. It also moderates gluconeogenesis in the liver, supporting healthy fasting blood sugar levels and blood sugar management.

However, banaba leaf does not affect gut bacteria or relate to cholesterol levels, so its effects are not as broad as berberine's.

Bitter melon

For Koreans, bitter melon is the most familiar natural blood sugar support and has long been used to help manage blood sugar. Bitter melon contains a protein called polypeptide-p, which functions similarly to insulin and is known as plant insulin. This compound promotes glucose uptake into muscle and fat tissue, acting like insulin to help lower blood sugar levels.

Bitter melon also stimulates the beta cells of the pancreas to release more insulin.

Enzogenol

Enzogenol, a powerful antioxidant extracted from New Zealand pine bark, has mainly been used to support brain health, cardiovascular health and antioxidant defence, but it also offers strong support for blood sugar balance. While berberine, banaba leaf and bitter melon act directly on blood sugar, Enzogenol was long thought to contribute to blood sugar balance indirectly.

When blood flow deteriorates, nerves become damaged, and a body that is not properly supplied with blood develops complications in many places. Once complications appear in areas such as the eyes or kidneys, it is hard to return to the original state, and if the coronary arteries or cerebral blood vessels narrow or become blocked, life can be at risk.

Enzogenol, a powerful antioxidant extracted from New Zealand pine bark, itself helps lower blood sugar and dilates blood vessels so that thickened blood can flow well.

A double-blind trial was recently conducted showing that Enzogenol helps lower post-meal blood sugar levels. This trial revealed that, in addition to the indirect benefit of protecting the pancreas, Enzogenol has a direct effect in lowering post-meal blood sugar.

When 50mg of Enzogenol was taken just before a meal, blood sugar 2 hours after eating fell by as much as 22 percent, with a significant improvement in insulin resistance. Among participants taking 50mg of Enzogenol, 33 percent reached normal levels, and when the dose was increased to 400mg, 55 percent returned to normal, demonstrating its excellent blood sugar support.

BerberineBerberine

❤️ Circulation🥗 Nutrition balance🌿 Gut & digestion
What it is

Berberine is a yellow alkaloid found in the roots and stems of plants such as goldthread (Coptis), Amur cork tree and barberry (Berberis). A major constituent of traditional East Asian botanicals, it has recently been studied extensively in relation to blood glucose and lipid metabolism markers.

How it works

Berberine has been studied for activating AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase), known as the cell's energy sensor, shifting muscle and liver toward greater glucose use and fatty acid oxidation. In liver cells, it has been reported to increase LDL receptor (LDLR) expression and lower PCSK9 expression, contributing to the clearance of blood LDL cholesterol. Because it is poorly absorbed from the gut, studies suggest it may act directly on the gut microbiota and intestinal lining, which is discussed as one pathway behind changes in metabolic markers.

What studies report
  1. A meta-analysis of 46 RCTs in adults needing blood glucose management reported that berberine (alone or alongside existing care) was associated with reductions in HbA1c, fasting glucose, 2-hour post-meal glucose, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, and an increase in HDL cholesterol (2021).
  2. A meta-analysis of placebo-controlled RCTs in adults with metabolic risk factors reported changes after berberine in triglycerides (−0.37 mmol/L), fasting glucose (−0.52 mmol/L), waist circumference (−3.27 cm) and LDL cholesterol (−0.50 mmol/L), with no significant change in HDL cholesterol or blood pressure (2025).
  3. A meta-analysis pooling 27 RCTs (2,569 participants) found that combining lifestyle management with berberine produced greater changes in blood glucose, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol markers than lifestyle management alone, with no serious adverse events reported (2015).
💡 If you take medications affected by liver metabolising enzymes (CYP), such as glucose-lowering drugs, blood pressure medication or cyclosporine, be sure to consult a professional. Digestive symptoms such as constipation or abdominal discomfort may occur, and it is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding or for newborns.

Bitter MelonBitter melon (Momordica charantia)

🥗 Nutrition balance⚡ Energy & metabolism🌿 Gut & digestion
What it is

Bitter melon is the fruit of a tropical vine in the gourd family, known for its strong bitter taste and widely used as a food and traditional ingredient across Asia, India and the Caribbean. Its main known constituents include charantin, polypeptide-p and cucurbitane triterpenoids.

How it works

Laboratory studies report that bitter melon's cucurbitane-type triterpenoids and charantin activate AMPK in muscle and liver cells and promote translocation of the glucose transporter GLUT4. Polypeptide-p is described as a plant protein with an insulin-like structure, and slowing of carbohydrate-digesting enzyme activity in the gut has also been studied. These effects have mainly been observed at the cell and animal level, and results from human studies are inconsistent.

What studies report
  1. In a 12-week parallel RCT (38 participants) of adults with borderline glucose metabolism markers, the group taking freeze-dried whole bitter melon (3.6 g/day) showed significant reductions in fasting glucose, fasting insulin and HOMA-IR versus control, while a 4-week crossover trial (30 participants) found no significant difference between groups (2025).
  2. A meta-analysis of 8 RCTs (423 participants) reported reductions in total cholesterol (−9.71 mg/dL) and triglycerides (−10.24 mg/dL) after bitter melon, with no significant change in LDL or HDL cholesterol (2024).
  3. A meta-analysis of 9 RCTs (414 participants) found no significant differences versus placebo in fasting glucose, HbA1c, lipids or body weight, concluding that current evidence is insufficient to judge its effect on metabolic markers (2024).
  4. A meta-analysis of 10 clinical trials (448 participants) found no significant changes in body weight, BMI, waist circumference or body fat percentage with bitter melon (2024).
💡 If you take glucose-lowering medication, consult a professional, as blood glucose may drop too low. It is recommended to avoid it if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, or if you have G6PD deficiency.

Banaba Leaf (Corosolic Acid)Banaba leaf (Lagerstroemia speciosa) / Corosolic acid

🥗 Nutrition balance⚡ Energy & metabolism❤️ Circulation
What it is

Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa) is a crape myrtle species native to the Philippines and Southeast Asia, where its leaves are traditionally brewed as a tea. Corosolic acid, a triterpene found in the leaves, is its key marker compound and is mainly studied in relation to post-meal blood glucose.

How it works

Laboratory studies report that corosolic acid supports phosphorylation of the insulin receptor inside cells and promotes translocation of the glucose transporter GLUT4 to the cell membrane, contributing to glucose uptake by muscle and fat cells. The ellagitannins in banaba leaf are associated with slowing the enzymes that break down starch and sucrose in the gut (α-glucosidase, α-amylase). Other studies suggest roles in limiting hepatic gluconeogenesis and modulating lipid metabolism (via signalling pathways such as PPAR).

What studies report
  1. In a double-blind crossover study of 31 people, taking 10 mg of corosolic acid 5 minutes before a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test kept blood glucose lower than placebo at 60–120 minutes, with a significant difference reported at 90 minutes (2006).
  2. A literature review of animal, cell and human studies on banaba and corosolic acid summarised several mechanisms, including enhanced glucose uptake, delayed breakdown of starch and sucrose, and reduced gluconeogenesis, and noted that no adverse effects were reported in controlled human trials (2012).
  3. In a retrospective observational study of 31 overweight or obese postmenopausal women, 12 weeks of combined myo-inositol 2 g and banaba extract (1% corosolic acid) 48 mg was followed by reductions in fasting insulin and HOMA-IR and a 23.5% reduction in the glucose area under the curve on a glucose tolerance test (2025, uncontrolled study).
💡 If you use glucose-lowering medication or insulin, consult a professional before use, as blood glucose may drop too low. Safety data during pregnancy and breastfeeding are insufficient, so it is best avoided during these periods.

Enzogenol (New Zealand Pine Bark Extract)Enzogenol (Pinus radiata bark extract)

🛡️ Antioxidant❤️ Circulation🧘 Stress & sleep
What it is

A plant polyphenol ingredient made by water extraction of the bark of New Zealand radiata pine (Pinus radiata). On a dry powder basis it contains over 80% proanthocyanidins, along with taxifolin (1–2%) and other flavonoids and phenolic acids.

How it works

Its main constituents, proanthocyanidins (oligomers of linked catechin and epicatechin units), are known to scavenge free radicals directly and regenerate vitamin C, supporting the body's antioxidant network. Studies have looked at its relationship to the nitric oxide (NO) production environment in vascular endothelial cells, and cell experiments observed reduced expression of endothelial adhesion molecules and reduced monocyte migration in response to TNF-α stimulation. Test-tube studies have also reported lowered activity of carbohydrate-digesting enzymes (α-amylase, α-glucosidase), so its relationship to post-meal metabolic responses is being studied. These antioxidant and vascular mechanisms form the background for research on blood flow to the brain and cognitive function markers.

What studies report
  1. In a 5-week double-blind controlled study of 42 men aged 50–65 with a body mass index of 25 or more, the Enzogenol + vitamin C group showed faster response times on spatial working memory and immediate recognition tasks, while the vitamin C-only group showed no change. There were no changes in blood safety markers.
  2. In a study randomising 44 adult smokers to Enzogenol 480 mg + vitamin C or vitamin C alone for 12 weeks, vascular dilation response (FMD) improved similarly in both groups, but the protein oxidation marker (protein carbonyl) was significantly lower in the Enzogenol group, and lower fibrinogen levels were observed in heavier smokers.
  3. In a crossover study in which 25 healthy adults took placebo and Enzogenol 50 mg and 400 mg before oral glucose tolerance tests, people with a single-peak glucose curve showed a lower post-meal incremental glucose area (iAUC) and lower peak glucose than with placebo.
  4. Composition and toxicity studies of the ingredient reported no abnormal findings with repeated dosing in animals, and no adverse changes in liver or kidney function or haematological markers in humans taking 480 mg/day for 6 months or 960 mg/day for 5 weeks.

1

Taking this formula 30 minutes before a meal may help reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes and get the most from its support. Taken at this time, the natural ingredients begin working while food is being digested, helping to moderate the rise in blood sugar.

However, because of its high content of natural herbs, if you have a sensitive stomach or feel discomfort, take it with a meal or right after eating.

To avoid a sudden drop in blood sugar, increase the dose gradually while closely watching how much your blood sugar falls.

Popular with

  • When blood sugar balance becomes a concern The body uses glucose as its main energy source. For glucose in the blood to be used as energy, it must enter the cells, and the hormone that pushes glucose into cells is insulin. When blood sugar rises, blood clouded by sugar combines with free radicals that attack the body, leaving damage throughout blood vessels and nerves. When cholesterol or triglycerides build up in this damage, the capillaries become blocked first, and gradually even larger blood vessels narrow, leading to serious complications. If blood sugar has become a concern for you, we encourage you to try this natural blood sugar support formula.
  • Weight management When blood sugar keeps rising from consistently eating too much, the body tries to lower it by producing more insulin. But if this continues, insulin resistance develops, where even large amounts of insulin cannot properly lower blood sugar. With insulin resistance, the body switches into fat-storage mode, leading to excess weight or obesity. When blood sugar is well balanced, insulin resistance improves and insulin sensitivity increases, so blood sugar can be well managed with smaller amounts of insulin. When the amount of insulin in the blood decreases, glucose is not converted into fat, supporting healthy weight management.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome Insulin resistance refers to a state in which, despite the body releasing plenty of insulin, sensitivity to insulin is reduced, so excess blood sugar cannot be pushed into cells and blood sugar levels in the body rise. In a state of insulin resistance, the large amounts of insulin released to lower blood sugar stimulate the ovaries to produce androgens, and the excess of these male hormones leads to polycystic ovary syndrome. By helping to bring down blood sugar in people with polycystic ovary syndrome who have developed insulin resistance, this natural formula may help reduce insulin release and, as a result, androgen production, offering meaningful support for related symptoms.
