Saw Palmetto & LycopeneSaw palmetto + Lycopene
Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is the fruit of a palm native to the southeastern United States, and its fat-soluble extract, rich in fatty acids and plant sterols, is used as an ingredient for middle-aged men. Lycopene is the carotenoid that gives tomatoes their red colour and is a potent antioxidant.
Laboratory studies indicate that the fatty acids (lauric acid, oleic acid, etc.) and beta-sitosterol in saw palmetto extract inhibit 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and research has also looked at pathways related to inflammatory mediators and smooth muscle tension. Lycopene is a carotenoid with a high capacity to quench singlet oxygen and has been studied in relation to markers of oxidative damage to lipids and DNA and vascular endothelial function.
- A Cochrane systematic review (2023) pooling randomised controlled studies in men with urinary discomfort assessed saw palmetto alone as making little or no difference to urinary symptom scores versus placebo. It should be considered an ingredient with mixed evidence.
- In a 12-week randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 68 Japanese people aged 50 and over who experienced discomfort from frequent urination without any diagnosis (320 mg/day), daytime urinary frequency discomfort scores and daytime voiding frequency in a voiding diary improved versus placebo.
- In an 8-week randomised, placebo-controlled study of 126 healthy men, the group taking lycopene 15 mg/day showed a dose-dependent rise in serum lycopene, increased antioxidant enzyme (SOD) activity, reduced lymphocyte DNA damage markers and improved vascular endothelial function markers (RH-PAT).
