Cissus (Cissus quadrangularis)Cissus quadrangularis
Cissus is a climbing plant of the grape family native to India, Southeast Asia and Africa, traditionally called the 'bone-setter' because of the shape of its stem. Its stem and leaf extracts contain polyphenols such as quercetin and resveratrol, phytosterols, vitamin C and calcium.
The polyphenols and sterols in cissus act as antioxidants, and animal and cell studies have observed effects on osteoblast differentiation signals and bone metabolism markers. For weight management, studies have looked at inhibition of fat-digesting (lipase) and carbohydrate-digesting enzyme activity, and changes in adipose tissue hormone markers such as leptin and adiponectin. However, human studies are still few and small, so interpretation requires caution.
- A meta-analysis of 7 randomised controlled studies (354 participants) found that cissus was associated with increased blood parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, but not with significant changes in other bone-related markers such as calcium, phosphorus or alkaline phosphatase; the certainty of evidence was rated very low.
- In an 8-week double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 67 overweight adults, the group taking 300 mg/day of cissus extract (CQR-300) showed lower body fat percentage (measured by bioelectrical impedance and DEXA), waist and hip circumference, blood lipids and fasting glucose, and higher adiponectin, versus placebo.
- In an 8-week randomised, double-blind study of 123 overweight adults with high body mass index, the group taking a multi-ingredient blend containing cissus showed reductions in body weight, waist circumference, blood lipids and CRP regardless of dietary control (as a combination formula, the results are difficult to attribute to cissus alone).
